Thai Airways Second-Quarter Profits Slide on Fuel Costs

Thai Airways reports a steep profit drop for the second quarter of 2026 as skyrocketing jet fuel prices weigh heavily on the carrier.

Thai Airways Second-Quarter Profits Slide on Fuel Costs

Thai Airways International posted a net profit of 1.54 billion baht for the second quarter of 2026, marking a dramatic descent from the 12.13 billion baht recorded during the corresponding period last year. The flag carrier generated 48.62 billion baht in total revenue excluding one-time items, representing an 8.5 percent year-on-year increase. This top-line growth stemmed primarily from a 20.3 percent jump in average passenger yield, which factors in fuel and insurance surcharges. Despite higher ticket yields, operating expenses surged 29.7 percent to 44.93 billion baht. Ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East drove jet fuel prices up by 104.6 percent, eroding margins across the airline's network.

Operational metrics reflected the regional disruptions during the quarter. Thai Airways operated a fleet of 84 aircraft with an average daily utilization of 12.9 hours, transporting 3.66 million passengers. Available Seat Kilometers dropped 4.4 percent to 16,778 million due to route reductions forced by Middle Eastern instability. Revenue Passenger Kilometers fell 11.3 percent to 11,993 million, pulling the average cabin factor down to 71.5 percent compared to 77 percent a year prior. For the first half of 2026, the carrier accumulated a net profit of 11.64 billion baht on revenues of 99.65 billion baht, cushioned by gains from aircraft lease modifications.

What This Means for American Travelers to Thai Airways

Americans traveling to Thai Airways will encounter shifting flight schedules and potentially higher ticket prices as the carrier adjusts capacity to cope with soaring fuel expenses. US tourists in Thai Airways network should verify flight frequencies well in advance, particularly for routes connecting through regional hubs affected by aircraft redeployments. While the airline maintains robust liquidity with 123.76 billion baht in cash and current financial assets as of June 2026, schedule reliability may fluctuate on specific international segments. Ticket holders flying from the United States should monitor their itineraries closely for unannounced timing adjustments or aircraft substitutions.

Thai Airways Travel Tips for Americans Visiting Thai Airways

  • Book long-haul segments early to secure preferred seating, as reduced capacity on certain routes may increase load factors.
  • Monitor airfare fluctuations closely, because rising fuel surcharges can alter ticket pricing abruptly before departure.
  • Maintain flexible travel dates when visiting Thai Airways destinations from the US to accommodate potential schedule adjustments.
