A massive renewable energy system now powers Saudi Arabia's premier Red Sea tourism destination entirely off the traditional grid.

Saudi Arabia has brought its Red Sea multi-utility project to full commercial operation, establishing the planet's largest off-grid renewable energy system for a tourism destination. Engineering firm SEPCOIII, a subsidiary of PowerChina, finalized construction under a contract signed with developer ACWA Power in February 2021. The complex operates completely independent of the national electrical grid on the country's western coast, utilizing 358 MWac of installed solar photovoltaic capacity and 1,225.4 MWh of battery storage. Huawei supplied the inverters and lithium battery units, which earned Guinness World Records certification in May 2025 as the highest-capacity off-grid battery facility globally.

Construction on the massive energy storage unit began in October 2021, with preliminary operations kicking off in September 2023. Unlike standard solar installations connected to traditional transmission grids, this isolated microgrid must independently manage voltage and frequency stability while balancing fluctuating solar generation against heavy commercial demand. The infrastructure package goes far beyond electricity, integrating three reverse-osmosis desalination plants, wastewater treatment facilities, and 32,500 refrigeration tons of district cooling. Operating under a 25-year public-private partnership backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, the utility cluster serves operational resorts, airside facilities at Red Sea International Airport, electric vehicle charging stations, and local 5G telecommunications.
