Hajj 2027 Flights Start April 8: Route Changes for Indian Pilgrims

Saudi Arabia will host the 2027 Hajj pilgrimage with air operations from India commencing on April 8, 2027. The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has finalized the schedule for transporting over 123,000 Indian pilgrims to the Kingdom by May 9. This massive logistical operation involves flights from 19 designated embarkation points across India, creating a significant influx of visitors to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah during the peak season.

The return journey for these pilgrims is scheduled between May 21 and June 20, 2027. Most participants remain in the Kingdom for 35 to 45 days. A specialized 20-day short Hajj package is available for approximately 13,000 pilgrims, but this option is restricted to ten specific airports. In Kerala, Kochi is the only airport offering this short-duration service, while Kozhikode and Kannur handle standard departures. Large aircraft from Kozhikode are excluded again this year due to infrastructure limitations, forcing airlines to use smaller fleets.

For Americans traveling to Saudi Arabia outside of the Hajj window, this mass movement creates predictable logistical bottlenecks. US tourists in Saudi Arabia during April and May will encounter heightened air traffic congestion at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah. Flight delays become more frequent as airlines prioritize Hajj charter operations. Hotel inventory in Makkah and Madinah sells out months in advance, driving up prices for independent visitors. Americans planning to visit the holy cities for Umrah or leisure during these months should book accommodations and ground transport well ahead of time. The influx also affects local infrastructure, potentially leading to longer wait times for taxi services and increased demand for water and food supplies in central areas.

Travel Tips for Americans Visiting Saudi Arabia

  • Book accommodation early: If visiting during April or May, secure lodging at least six months in advance. Rates surge when Hajj pilgrims arrive, and chains like Marriott and Hyatt in Jeddah fill quickly.
  • Consider alternative entry points: For business or leisure, fly into Riyadh instead of Jeddah to avoid peak Hajj airport congestion. Domestic flights to Makkah can be arranged later if needed.
  • Verify visa status: Ensure your eVisa or transit visa is valid. Saudi Arabia tourism regulations may tighten during the Hajj season, so confirm entry requirements with the consulate before departure.
  • Plan ground transport: Traditional taxis may be scarce during peak hours. Use ride-sharing apps like Uber or Careem, which tend to have more availability, or hire a private driver for multi-day itineraries.
